The "U0025 OBD-II: Low Speed CAN Communication Bus (-) Low" diagnostic trouble code (DTC) signifies an issue with the communication on the vehicle's Low-Speed CAN (Controller Area Network) bus. The CAN bus facilitates communication between various electronic control units (ECUs) within the vehicle. This particular code indicates that the voltage on the Low-Speed CAN bus is lower than the expected range.

The vehicle's CAN bus system is typically divided into two categories: high-speed and low-speed. High-speed CAN is utilized for critical systems such as engine control, transmission, and safety features, while low-speed CAN is used for less critical systems like body control modules (which manage doors, windows, and seats), climate control, and infotainment systems.

The U0025 code specifically points to a problem where the communication signal on the low-speed CAN bus is too weak. This can be due to an abnormal voltage drop or a weak signal, which can disrupt the proper communication between the modules connected to the low-speed bus. This disruption can lead to malfunctions or reduced functionality of the systems connected to this network.

Possible Causes of U0025 Code :

  • Damaged Wiring: Frayed, cut, or damaged wiring in the low-speed CAN network.

  • Faulty ECU: One of the control modules (such as the body control module or infotainment module) might be malfunctioning, causing the bus to operate incorrectly.
  • Faulty Termination Resistor: The termination resistor at the end of the bus might be faulty or missing.
  • Interference or Grounding Issues: Electromagnetic interference or poor grounding can also affect the signal integrity.
  • Software Issues: A problem with the software of one of the ECUs could lead to improper communication.

How to Fix it?

Ensure to check for any damaged components and inspect the connector pins for signs of being broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded.

Common Diagnose and Repairs:

  • Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Visually inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors for any damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair as needed.
  • Check Termination Resistor: Verify that the termination resistor is properly installed and in good condition.
  • Check for ECU Faults: If you suspect a malfunctioning ECU, perform diagnostics on each module connected to the low-speed CAN bus and replace any defective ECUs.
  • Clear Fault Codes and Retest: After addressing the issues, clear the fault codes and retest the system to confirm that the issue is resolved.
