U0019 Guide to Diagnosing

Low Speed CAN Communication Bus

The U0019 OBD-II code refers to a "Low-Speed CAN Communication Bus" issue. It is part of the OBD-II diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) that relate to vehicle communication problems. In this case, the vehicle’s Low-Speed Controller Area Network (CAN) communication bus, which is responsible for communication between various vehicle control modules (ECMs, BCMs, etc.), is experiencing problems.

Symptoms:

Warning Lights, Erratic or Malfunctioning Systems, Reduced Engine Performance, Communication Loss with Modules, Diagnostic Scan Tool Communication Failure

Possible Causes of U0019 Code :

  • Wiring Issues: Damaged, corroded, or loose wires in the CAN network can cause communication issues.
  • Faulty ECU/Modules: A malfunctioning Electronic Control Unit (ECU) or module on the CAN bus might cause the communication problem.
  • Defective Termination Resistors: If the terminating resistors at the end of the CAN bus are faulty or missing, communication can be disrupted.
  • CAN Bus Short Circuit: A short circuit or poor connection between the wires can interrupt communication.
  • Electrical Interference: Interference from other electrical components can affect the signal integrity on the bus.

How to Fix it?

Ensure to check for any damaged components and inspect the connector pins for signs of being broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded.

Common Diagnose and Repairs:

  • Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring and connectors for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion.
  • Diagnostic Scan: Use an OBD-II scanner to read other related codes that could help pinpoint the exact location of the problem.
  • Check Control Modules: Verify that the control modules involved in the CAN Bus are functioning properly and are not faulty.
  • Test the Wiring: Use a multimeter to check for continuity or shorts between the CAN Bus lines.

WARNING

Driving with vehicle warning codes can be dangerous and may do further damage to your vehicle. It is highly advisable that you have the vehicle inspected and diagnosed by a certified vehicle technician as soon as possible.
