Vehicle Trouble Codes and Diagnostics

U0018 Guide to Diagnosing

Medium Speed CAN Communication Bus (-) shorted to Bus (+)

The U0018 OBD-II error code is usually associated with a fault in the Medium-Speed CAN (Controller Area Network) Communication Bus, specifically when the CAN Bus (-) (ground line) is shorted to the CAN Bus (+) (signal line). This short circuit can cause communication problems between different control modules in the vehicle.

This issue arises when the ground line and the signal line of the CAN Bus become electrically connected, disrupting communication and potentially leading to failures in the vehicle's electronic systems.

Symptoms:

Loss of Communication, Malfunction of Multiple Systems, Check Engine Light, Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), Reduced Vehicle Performance

Possible Causes of U0018 Code :

  • Wiring Issues: A short circuit in the wiring harness could occur due to wear, corrosion, or poor insulation. This can cause the negative and positive lines to come into contact, creating a short.
  • Faulty CAN Bus Connector: If a connector for the CAN Bus is loose, damaged, or improperly seated, it could result in a short between the positive and negative lines.
  • Damaged Control Modules: A malfunction in one of the control modules that use the CAN Bus for communication can cause the bus to short out, leading to communication issues.
  • Improper Installation of Electrical Components: If electrical components or aftermarket parts (e.g., radio, GPS) are installed incorrectly, they could damage the CAN Bus wiring or connectors.
  • Defective ECU/ECM: A faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) or other related control module might cause communication failures leading to shorting.
  • Faulty Grounding: A problem with the grounding of the CAN Bus circuit can lead to communication failures.

How to Fix it?

Ensure to check for any damaged components and inspect the connector pins for signs of being broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded.

Common Diagnose and Repairs:

  • Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring and connectors for any signs of damage, wear, or corrosion.
  • Diagnostic Scan: Use an OBD-II scanner to read other related codes that could help pinpoint the exact location of the problem.
  • Check Control Modules: Verify that the control modules involved in the CAN Bus are functioning properly and are not faulty.
  • Test the Wiring: Use a multimeter to check for continuity or shorts between the CAN Bus lines.

WARNING

Driving with vehicle warning codes can be dangerous and may do further damage to your vehicle. It is highly advisable that you have the vehicle inspected and diagnosed by a certified vehicle technician as soon as possible.
