U0005 Guide to Diagnosing

High Speed CAN Communication Bus (+) High

The U0005 OBD-II code refers to an issue with the High-Speed CAN Communication Bus (+) line, which is part of the vehicle's Controller Area Network (CAN) communication system.

The CAN bus is a robust vehicle communication network that allows various control modules (ECUs) to exchange data. The code indicates that the voltage level of the High-Speed CAN (+) line is abnormally high, which could disrupt communication between modules.

Symptoms:

Check Engine Light (CEL), Intermittent or Total System Failures, Vehicle Performance Issues, Diagnostic Scanner Issues

Possible Causes of U0005 Code :

  • Wiring Issues:
  1. Short to voltage in the CAN (+) wire.
  2. Open or damaged wiring in the CAN (+) circuit.
  3. Corroded or damaged connectors.
  • Faulty Components:
  1. Malfunctioning CAN bus transceiver in one of the modules.
  2. Faulty control module (ECU) causing voltage irregularities.
  • Environmental Factors:
  1. Water ingress in wiring or connectors.
  2. Physical damage to the harness due to rodents or accidents.
  • Interference:
  1. Aftermarket installations interfering with CAN bus communication.
  2. Electromagnetic interference (rare).

How to Fix it?

Ensure to check for any damaged components and inspect the connector pins for signs of being broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded.

Common Diagnose and Repairs:

  • Scan for Additional Codes: Look for other U-codes or system-specific fault codes to narrow down the issue.
  • Inspect Wiring and Connectors:
  1. Check the High-Speed CAN (+) wire for damage, shorts, or corrosion.
  2. Inspect connectors for water ingress, dirt, or loose connections.
  • Test the CAN Bus System:
  1. Measure the voltage of the CAN (+) line. Normal voltage is around 2.5V when idle.
  2. Use an oscilloscope to verify proper CAN signal waveforms.
  • Check for Aftermarket Modifications: Ensure no aftermarket device is interfering with the CAN bus.
  • Module Isolation: Disconnect modules one at a time to identify the faulty component.

WARNING

Driving with vehicle warning codes can be dangerous and may do further damage to your vehicle. It is highly advisable that you have the vehicle inspected and diagnosed by a certified vehicle technician as soon as possible.
