P001C Guide to Diagnosing

"A" Camshaft Profile Control Circuit High

The P001C OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicates a problem with the "A" Camshaft Profile Control Circuit being too high. The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the voltage or current in this circuit exceeds the specified range.

The "A" Camshaft refers to the intake camshaft in Bank 1, which is the side of the engine containing Cylinder 1 in multi-bank engines. The "Profile Control Circuit" is associated with systems such as Variable Valve Timing (VVT) or Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT).

This issue primarily affects the camshaft timing system, which manages the valve timing to optimize engine performance, emissions, and fuel efficiency.

Symptoms:

Rough Idling or Stalling, Hesitation during Acceleration, Decreased Fuel Economy, Engine misfires in severe cases, Warning Indicators, Audible Ticking Noise, Difficulty Starting in Extreme Cases

Possible Causes of P001C Code :

  • Electrical Issues:
  1. Damaged or shorted wiring in the camshaft position actuator circuit.
  2. Corrosion or loose connections at the camshaft actuator or ECM.
  • Faulty Components:
  1. Malfunctioning camshaft position actuator solenoid.
  2. Defective ECM or driver circuit.
  • Mechanical Issues:
  1. Stuck camshaft actuator (mechanical failure inside the actuator).
  2. Oil sludge or low oil quality causing actuator sticking.
  • Oil-Related Issues:
  1. Low oil pressure due to insufficient oil levels or a failing oil pump.
  2. Dirty or degraded oil reducing lubrication to the camshaft actuator.

How to Fix it?

Ensure to check for any damaged components and inspect the connector pins for signs of being broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded.

Common Diagnose and Repairs:

  • Scan and Record: Use an OBD-II scanner to verify the code and check for additional codes.
  • Visual Inspection: Inspect wiring, connectors, and harnesses for damage or corrosion.
  • Check Oil Condition: Ensure oil is clean, at the correct level, and of the proper viscosity for the engine.
  • Test Components: Test the camshaft actuator solenoid using a multimeter for resistance or functionality.
  1. Check for proper oil flow to the camshaft actuator.
  • Replace Parts if Necessary:
  1. Replace faulty camshaft position actuators or solenoids.
  2. Repair or replace damaged wiring or connectors.
  •  ECM Programming: In rare cases, the ECM may require reprogramming if all hardware is functional.

WARNING

Driving with vehicle warning codes can be dangerous and may do further damage to your vehicle. It is highly advisable that you have the vehicle inspected and diagnosed by a certified vehicle technician as soon as possible.
