P0017 Guide to Diagnosing
Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation
The OBD-II code P0017 refers to a situation where the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a misalignment or irregularity between the crankshaft and camshaft positions. Specifically, this code is triggered when the timing between the camshaft (sensor B) and the crankshaft on Bank 1 is out of the expected range, indicating improper synchronization between the two components.
Symptoms:
Check Engine Light (CEL), Rough Idling or Poor Engine Performance, Reduced Engine Power, Engine Misfire, Increased Fuel Consumption, Stalling, Difficulty Starting
Possible Causes of P0017 Code :
- Faulty Camshaft or Crankshaft Position Sensors: The most common reason for P0017 is a defective camshaft position sensor (Sensor B) or crankshaft position sensor.
- Timing Chain or Belt Issues: The timing chain or belt could be stretched, worn, or damaged, causing improper alignment between the crankshaft and camshaft.
- Faulty Variable Valve Timing (VVT) System: If the engine has a Variable Valve Timing system, a malfunction in this system can cause incorrect timing between the crankshaft and camshaft.
- Oil Issues: Low oil levels or poor oil quality can prevent the proper functioning of the VVT system, affecting timing synchronization.
- Damaged or Worn Timing Gear: If the timing gear is damaged or worn, it may result in the improper positioning of the camshaft and crankshaft.
- Wiring or Connection Issues: Corroded, loose, or damaged wiring or connectors between the camshaft/crankshaft sensors and the ECM can lead to inaccurate readings.
- Faulty ECM/PCM: Though less common, a faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) could misinterpret sensor data and trigger this code.
How to Fix it?
Ensure to check for any damaged components and inspect the connector pins for signs of being broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded.
Common Diagnose and Repairs:
- Use a Scan Tool: The first step is to connect an OBD-II scanner to check for stored codes, confirming P0017 and possibly other related codes.
- Check Sensor Operation: Inspect the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors for proper function. Verify the sensor wiring for continuity and any visible damage.
- Inspect Timing Belt/Chain: Check for signs of wear, damage, or stretching in the timing belt or chain.
- Verify VVT System Operation: If your vehicle has a Variable Valve Timing system, check the VVT solenoid and related components for functionality.
- Check Oil Levels and Quality: Ensure the oil level is correct and that the oil is in good condition. Replace the oil if necessary.
- Check for Mechanical Issues: Inspect the timing gears and related components for any signs of wear or damage.
